Next week will be the school’s 1st term break and so fast Dillon has been to kindergarten for more than 2 months. I’m sure he has been enjoying his time at school because he is always looking forward to school days.
Everyday after work, I will check his bag and see what he is up to, and do some revisio39n on the books he read in school. Sometimes I also teach him in writing alphabets and numbers, or let him do some colouring (he loves colouring!).
When I spoke to his class teacher last 2 weeks, the teacher said she found that Dillon writes better with his left hand (which I also noticed is true) and thus she is focused on training him to write with his left hand. But when at home, I noticed that he will write with his left hand for a while, and then with right hand, and then left again.
I wonder, when are we able to tell if a child is a left-hander or right-hander? Should I let him develop by himself or should I keep reminding him to write with his left hand?

1My dotter is left-handed, we didn’t realise she is left-handed (actually since small, she hold thing, take toys using left hand, blur mummy did not notice only).
I only knew when she start to eat by her own using the spoon. She only can use left hand to write but right hand totally cannot write, not like Dillon.
Maybe you can observe how often he use left hand to hold thing, using spoon….then you will know, he is left or right.
karenyiau: thanks vivian, i didn’t really pay attention what hand he is using to hold spoon, i thought both hands also got use…..hmmm i shall let him be and observe how it goes.

2some kids can use both hands, but of cos it’s uncommon
i think u should just let dillon develop naturally
karenyiau: ya i shall see how it goes, i’m actually not particular on whether he is a left hander or right hander, just feel funny that he is using both hands to write.

4my dotter use both hand for coloring, holding chopsticks or spoon, right hand for writing. it is good that they use both hand, dun worry.
karenyiau: ya i’m not worry, just wondering if I should encourage him to use his left hand when writing.

5Nevermind if he using both hand, the important is he feel comfortable eg. writing with left hand, eating with right hand.
karenyiau: I didn’t really notice which hand he uses to hold spoon most often, but writing wise he is switching between both hands.

6My bryan is left handed since he was born! But my mom tends to switch him to right hand when it comes to writing, feeding, etc. So now, most of the time he uses his right hand to write, color, eat. But other things, like throwing a ball, kicking a ball, he uses his left hand and left leg.

8I have read from a mag stated that some reseach said that we can determine a baby whether they are a right handed or lefty even when they are in the womb. Hmm…
Sometimes I also noticed my girl loves to use her left hand to write, for me I am ok with it. I think maybe is good to let Dillon developed by himself? So that he will know which hand to use is more better and convenient for him.

9let him be…my boy same with D, write/scribble with both hand when he’s 3-4yo. We just let him developed by himself…he’s 6+ & write with his left hand most of the time now, he still can write with his right hand but left hand writing nicer & faster
